Scuffed out of the box

Why would Lifestride package and mail me a shoe that is clearly scuffed? The irony is that I ordered the shoes because my other worn shoes were scuffed. So, imagine my surprise when I opened the box holding my new shoes to find that one of the shoes was in unsellable condition. I return shipping wouldn't cost me, I would've returned them. Where's the quality assurance??
